A new speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour is being extended to most of Dublin city centre from today.

The limit will apply from Church Street to Gardiner Street up to Dorset Street on the Northside of the city and from Bridge Street to Dawson Street down to Kevin Street on the southside.

The move has been criticised by the AA which says the traffic problem in the capital will be exacerbated.

However Dublin City Council says the measure will save lives.
