Public sector industrial action to intensify

The campaign by trade unions against Government imposed pay cuts on public servants is gathering momentum.

Employees at four state employers - UCD, NUI Maynooth, An Bord Iascaigh Mhara and the regional fisheries boards have voted in favour of a more aggressive stance

Employers are being served with notice of the action today.

Unite has 7,000 members across the health, local authority and education sectors.

The backing of the industrial action comes in the wake of the €1bn pay cuts introduced by the Government in Budget 2010.

Tomorrow, members at Enterprise Ireland and the National Standards Authority of Ireland will join the campaign.

However, the Government says it is standing by the decision on pay cuts and is refusing to rule out further reductions as the Government seeks €3bn in savings next year.
