Up to a 1,000 homes around the country remain without electricity after high winds brought down power lines overnight.

Wicklow was worst hit, although the ESB has restored power to around 1,000 homes there.

Parts of Bunclody, Urlingford and Thurles are still affected, as are Killarney and Killorglin in Kerry and areas of west Cork.

Maolmuire Tynan of the ESB said crews were battling poor weather conditions to rectify the situation.

Meanwhile, hundreds of homes remain without water due to frozen or burst pipes.

Local authorities are struggling to meet high levels of demand and have reduced pressure and supply in some areas.

Services to more than 4,000 residents in Cork city are being restored throughout the day whilst South Dublin County Council has restored water pressure.

However, parts of Dublin, Donegal and Clare remain affected.
