Commuters warned to take extra care

As tens of thousands of people take to the roads this morning after the Christmas break, drivers are being warned to take extra care.

Temperatures plummeted again overnight leading to dangerous driving conditions.

The cold snap is set to continue for a number of days, with sleet and snow forecast for today.

Local authorities will take delivery of extra grit today after they used a third of an entire season's supply over Christmas.

Bus Éireann said the majority of its services are operating to schedule this morning with some delays.

Among the small number of routes affected were route 109A from Navan to Dublin Airport, which was not operating via Rathoath, and the 6.30am Kilucan to Dublin bus which was cancelled.

Bus Éireann said it will continue to monitor the situation closely and it is advising customers travelling to and from Leinster to contact their local travel office for more information.

"It's going to be a very cold and frosty start to the day," said Pat Clarke of Met Éireann.

"There will be ice on untreated roads, so a tricky enough start to the day for the commute to work."
