Co Kerry school damaged by fire

A primary school in Co Kerry has been damaged by a fire in the early hours of this morning.

Two units of the fire brigade were dispatched to Scoil Mhuire in Killorglin at 2.30am this morning.

A forensic examination of the scene is underway.

School principal Tom Colgan said extensive damage has been caused to an office, while windows were broken in several classrooms.

He said that fire doors had prevented the spread of the fire but many school records stored in the office have been destroyed.

Mr Colgan said that he was relieved that nobody had been injured, but that it was extremely disappointing.

More than 380 pupils attend the school, which has a staff of 21 teachers.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established but Killorglin gardaí are investigating, and have appealed to anyone who was in the area of the school this morning, or anyone who may have noticed anything to contact them on 066 9790500.
