Serbia to apply for EU membership

Serbia is to formally apply for membership of the European Union, it has emerged.

The application next week will come 10 years after the end of the wars in the Balkans.

Serbia's path to EU membership has been stalled due to its failure to arrest ex-Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic.

While the formal application will be made next Tuesday, it is likely to be a number of years before membership is granted.
