Two still in garda custody over Westport incident

Two men remain in Garda custody in connection with an incident at a house in Westport, Co Mayo in the early hours of this morning.

Gardaí were called to the house at Pearse Terrace in the town at around 2.30am to investigate reports of anti-social behaviour.

A couple and their two-month-old baby were held against their will by two young men.

A garda remained in the room throughout the ordeal.

The remaining officers sought back up and at around 4am, two young men, described as being from the area, were arrested.

The couple and the baby were taken to University College Hospital in Galway with the woman having sustained serious facial injuries.

Another woman in her early 20s was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Gardaí say the HSE have been notified of the incident.

The two young men are being held at Westport Garda Station.
