Age Action says the level of violence used in an attack on a retired couple in their Longford home is shocking.

Raiders are reported to have used a taser stun gun and threatened to cut off the fingers of a 65-year-old German man during an aggravated burglary at his Clondra home yesterday.

Both he and his 74-year-old wife were treated in hospital following the ordeal, while gardaí are still questioning three men over the attack.

Spokesperson for Age Action Eamon Timmins said the escalating level of violence used in such attacks is worrying.

"We've had a spate of attacks in recent years but what's shocking people is the increasing level of violence being used," Mr Timmins said.

"This attack in Longford… the level of violence used against older people is terrifying them."
