Flood waters receding

Flood waters in the midwest are beginning to recede this morning.

In the past 24 hours water levels in Lough Derg have fallen by a further 6 centimetres.

The ESB says it has reduced the rate of discharge from Parteen Weir by 7% and it hopes to reduce this further over the next 24 hours.

It is anticipated water levels downstream of the weir in Clare and Limerick will recede by an estimated 7 or 8 centimetres over the day.

Flooding on the River Liffey in the east of the country has also peaked and is abating slowly according to the ESB.

However, water levels at the Poulaphuca Reservoir remain high and it will be necessary to discharge water gradually throughout the day.

The ESB says this level of discharge should minimise the impact of flooding downstream.
