Flooding situation 'stabilised'

Flooding that has affected many parts of the country is said to have 'stabilised' in the past 24 hours.

The Government has also confirmed more aid will be made available to flood victims.

Meanwhile water services have been restored to most households in Cork and schools will be able to reopen tomorrow.

It comes as the National Emergency Response Co-ordination Committee says it could take up to three weeks for flood waters from the Shannon to recede.

The committee will be monitoring water levels in the mid-west during high tide expected next Tuesday, with chairman Sean Hogan saying tides in the Shannon estuary were of primary concern as they could cause already high waters in the Shannon and Fergus rivers to back up.

But, he added "a lot of work" has been done to prepare for that situation.
