Investigators probe child's port accident death

Investigators are tonight probing the death of a three-year-old boy in a tragic accident at Drogheda Port.

It is understood the youngster was with his father who worked at the facility when he wandered off and was crushed by a falling log.

The little boy was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda where he died from his injuries.

In a brief statement Harbour Master Captain Martin Donnelly confirmed a tragic accident involving a minor in the port compound.

“That accident is now being investigated by An Garda Siochana, the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and Drogheda Port Company,” he added.

HSA inspectors at the scene are said to be trying to establish exactly what happened at the Co Louth dock shortly before midday.

The port handles more than 1.4 million tonnes of cargo a year in addition to over 700 vessel calls.
