Bruton expresses interest in EU presidency
Former Taoiseach John Bruton has put himself forward as a candidate for the new role of EU president that is due to be created by the Lisbon Treaty.
The issue is due to be discussed at a two-day EU summit that gets underway in Brussels today.
The new president will serve as chair of the European Council, the body that includes the heads of state of all 27 member states, and will also represent the EU on the world stage.
Mr Bruton is currently finishing up a five-year term as EU Ambassador to Washington and was always regarded as a potential candidate for the job.
Tony Blair is also lobbying strongly for the post, though he has yet to publicly declare his candidacy.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen has expressed support for the former British Prime Minister's candidacy, but it is unclear if the other EU leaders would like to see him get the job.
