Study: Many risk hearing loss
People with a hearing problem who suffer in silence for years before seeking help can seriously reduce their quality of life, it was claimed today.
Specialists revealed hearing loss affects almost one in six people, with nearly half of those aged over 50.
The Hidden Hearing mobile hearing clinic found 65% of those recently tested heard muffled sounds while more than a fifth had ringing in their ears. Audiologist Keith Ross revealed only 20% who need treatment seek help because they are unaware they have a problem, that think they can’t be helped, or have concerns about their appearance.
“Addressing a hearing problem early is one of the most important things you can do,” said Mr Ross.
“Ignoring hearing loss can not only be detrimental for your hearing health but can lead to other health problems and can seriously reduce your quality of life.”
Experts maintain ignoring hearing loss can lead to less social interaction, lack of confidence, isolation, depression and irritability. Hundreds of people attended free mobile clinics around the country as part of positive ageing week.
Of 485 patients who were surveyed:
:: 72% were concerned about their hearing
:: 21% had symptoms of hearing loss for three to four years; 21% for more than five years; and less than 10% for more than 15 years.
:: Over 55% had never had a hearing test before.
:: Despite having symptoms for a long time, 35% had never considered a test before.
:: 83% were aged over 45 years of age.
Mr Ross added: “It is clear from the survey results that despite people’s concern for their hearing, they will put up with poor hearing for many years before seeking help.
“We urge people not to ignore their hearing loss and to get their hearing checked once a year.”
