Man's leg broken in €60 theft

An elderly man suffered a suspected broken leg after thieves beat him in his home before fleeing with €60, it emerged today.

One of the attackers, aged in his early 20s, was arrested by gardaí a short time after the assault in Charlestown, Co Mayo at around 10pm yesterday.

But the second man, thought to be around 20, remains at large.

The homeowner, in his early 60s, was brought to Castlebar General Hospital were he was treated for his injuries.

The arrested man is being held at Swinford Garda Station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.

It is not known if the money was recovered.
