New system to fast-track jobseekers’ applications

A new process to fast-track jobseekers' payments is set to be introduced in around one-third of social welfare offices around the country.

The process will see staff members record, register and decide on claims in a single sitting.

The system was successfully trialled in Dundalk, but its roll-out was delayed by a row between the Department of Social Welfare and the Civil and Public Services Union.

Social and Family Affairs Minister Mary Hanafin says the changes will significantly reduce the current processing time of three to six weeks.
