Revenue seeking deal with Liechenstein on tax evaders

The Revenue Commissioners have confirmed that they are seeking a deal with Liechenstein to crack down on Irish people with secret bank accounts in the country.

Earlier this week, the authorities in Britain and the Alpine tax haven agreed a deal under which British people using secret accounts to evade tax can come clean in return for having their penalties capped.

Liechenstein has agreed to close the accounts of any Britons who do not comply.

The deal is expected to affect around 5,000 Britons with an estimated €3bn in Liechenstein banks.

The Revenue Commissions say they are seeking a similar agreement, though it is unclear how many Irish citizens could be affected.
