Man in custody over death of Irish aid worker

Police in Tanzania are questioning a man in connection with the death of a young Irish aid worker in the east African country.

Twenty-six-year-old Robert Stringer, from Co. Wicklow, was found with head injuries on a beach in Zanzibar on Friday.

His wallet and his shoes were missing.

Mr Stringer was on holiday on the island after five weeks of voluntary work with the Irish charity Camara, which donates second-hand computers to African countries.

The man being held in connection with his death is understood to be from Tanzania.

The Irish Embassy in Dar-es-Salaam is supporting Mr Stringer's family and will be co-ordinating the return to his body to Ireland.
