Teen due in court in connection with garda stabbing
A teenager is due in court this morning in connection with the stabbing of a garda in Co. Mayo in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Garda Daryl Mullen, who is from Tuam in Co. Galway, is in a stable but serious condition following the attack.
The 32-year-old, a member of the divisional drugs unit in Co Mayo, was on duty on James Street in Westport at around 1am yesterday when he was stabbed in the stomach.
The single knife wound left the officer needing emergency surgery and he remains in intensive care at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar this morning.
Gardaí say the stabbing occurred when Garda Mullen and three other officers approached a youth at the entrance to a car park in James Street.
The teenager ran from the scene after the attack, but was subsequently arrested nearby.
Gardaí have recovered what they believe is the knife that was used in the attack.
