Teenager charged over Garda stabbing

A teenager was tonight charged over the stabbing of a member of the Gardaí.

Garda Daryl Mullen remains in intensive care after undergoing emergency surgery.

A 16-year-old youth is due to appear at Mullingar District Court tomorrow.

Garda Mullen was investigating an incident on James Street, Westport, when he was stabbed in the abdomen at about 1am.

The 32-year-old, who was stationed in Castlebar, is from Tuam.

He was rushed to Mayo General Hospital by colleagues, where he remains in a stable condition.

Gardaí said a knife was recovered at the scene.

Westport Town Councillor Margaret Adams said everyone was dismayed by the knife attack.

“We regret such an incident would happen in the town centre,” said the Fianna Fail representative.

Mrs Adams called on the public to work with Gardaí on patrol in the area.

“Gardaí really need the support of people to carry put their duty,” she added.

“Our thoughts are with the garda who is in hospital.”
