Body found after search of Cavan lake

Members of the garda water unit have recovered the body of a man from Lough Gallen near Bailieborough in Co. Cavan.

It follows the search of a lake in the townland of Kilmore earlier this morning after a tragic boating incident last night.

The remains were found this morning by teams searching for a man who went missing during a rescue effort that went tragically wrong.

Another man also died during the incident yesterday.

Around six people who are believed to be from Dublin were on a boat trip in the lake last night and got into difficulty when their vessel capsized.

Two young men who were on the shoreline when the incident occurred, and witnessed the event, attempted to save them.

The 21-year-old local man who lost his life has been named locally as Simon Delaney, from the parish of Killinkere.

His body will undergo a post-mortem examination at Our Lady's hospital in Navan later today.

The second man's body is expected to be removed for a post-mortem later this afternoon.

Mr Delaney’s devastated parents Joe and Mary and his brother and sister were being comforted by family as the second body was recovered by search teams.

It is understood the young goalkeeper was driving to a match for Killinkere GAA with teammate Anthony Brady, 27, when they spotted a boat capsized on the lake and a group of men in the water.

Anthony’s father Peter said his son also tried to save his friend after he was dragged under by one of the drowning men.

“They could see them in difficulty and Simon jumped in,” said Mr Brady.

“He was being pulled down by one of the men and Anthony went out after him but he couldn’t get to them.

“The others swam ashore and Anthony pulled some out and got a plank of wood to get to the others.

“He went back out to try and find Simon in the water.

“Two local fellas came out in a boat and he was pulled in.

“His family are in bits.”

Mr Brady said the teammates had swum in the lake as teenagers and completed life saving courses.

“They would be very good swimmers,” he continued.

“The did life saving courses when they were young.

“They used to swim across the lake themselves, but this all happened in the wrong end.

“It’s very muddy and when they stood it sunk them in.”
