Man held in North in relation to 1996 Clare drug seizure

Police in the North have arrested a man in connection with a €19m cannabis seizure in the Republic more than 12 years ago.

The 46-year-old, from Belfast, was detained by the PSNI's Organised Crime Branch this morning.

He is being questioned in connection with the discovery of 1.7 tonnes of cannabis on a freighter that sailed into Kilrush Harbour in Co Clare in November 1996 with engine trouble.

Three crew members, including one from the North, were arrested at the time.
