The High Court has set a date for the hearing of an extradition to the UK of a former Galway hurling star wanted on fraud charges.

The British authorities are seeking the surrender of All-Ireland winner and businessman Pearse Piggott regarding his is alleged involvement in a multi-million fraud where eggs from caged hens were passed off to UK consumers as being free range or organic.

Today at the High Court Mr Justice Peart said he will hear the request for the surrender of Mr Piggott (aged 48), Ballylennon, Gort, Co Galway who runs the egg distribution firm Pearse Piggott and Sons at High Court next Thursday.

A member of the star-studded Galway hurling team of the 1980s, Mr Piggott played in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling final in the 1986 loss to Cork.

However, he claimed a winners medal 12 months later as a sub when Galway defeated Kilkenny that year's final.

In recent years, Mr Piggott previously severed as a selector to the Galway senior hurling team.
