GRA: Proposed cuts threaten policing

The Garda Representative Association is "outraged and dismayed" at An Bord Snip Nua's proposals to reduce garda pay, close half of all garda stations and privatise part of the policing function.

The only people who will welcome these recommendations will be the criminal element in our society, according to the association.

General Secretary PJ Stone said: "We propose that the government cease payment of garda overtime immediately and suffer the consequences of a reduced policing service."

"In regard to the proposed further reduction to garda pay, the report clearly does not take account that we are the lowest paid of our counterparts on this Island and in Britain. Britain is experiencing a similar economic downturn; yet Ireland is the only country in Western Europe to reduce police pay.

"Morale and motivation are being negatively affected, yet they are key components in effective policing. This all adds up to injustice against a group of workers, singled out as a soft target."
