Search continues for missing pair

A massive search operation was continuing tonight for a man and his teenage son missing since they went fishing on Sunday.

Fears were growing for the pair whose last movements were on rocks in the Allihies area of west Cork.

A friend of the Polish man, who is in his 40s, and his 13-year-old son, reported them missing to gardaí this morning.

Two fishing rods, a bag and clothing were later found at the scene.

A car belong to the man has also been recovered nearby.

Valentia Coastguard’s Danny Lynch said a full-scale air and sea search was concentrating on the Cod’s Head area of the Beara Peninsula between Allihies and Dursey island.

A rescue helicopter from Waterford, lifeboat and coastguard vessels from Castletownbere, and the Derrynane Inshore Rescue Service were searching the sea and coastline for the men, who live in Kenmare, Co Kerry.

Mr Lynch said conditions in the area are good for the search.

But weather along the treacherous coastline was rough on Sunday with gusty winds.

A garda spokesman said the search will be called off when darkness falls and will resume at first light.
