Irish leaders honour dead servicemen and women

A ceremony to honour the Irishmen and women who died in past wars, or on service, was held in Dublin today.

The National Day of Commemoration took place in the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham.

The ceremony was attended by the President, the Taoiseach and representatives of the Government Council of State, Diplomatic Corps, Dáil and Seanad, and the Judiciary.

Relatives of the 1916 leaders, representatives from the North, the next of kin of those who died in past wars or in UN service and a wide cross-section of the community including ex-servicemen also attended.

The service commenced with a multi-faith service of prayer after which the President laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland.
