The family of kidnapped Irish aid worker Sharon Commins are due to hold talks with the Sudanese Ambassador to Ireland later today.

Yesterday, Omer Mohamed Ahmed Siddig confirmed that negotiations are underway to secure the release of Ms Commins and her Ugandan colleague Hilda Kuwuki.

He said both women had been in contact with GOAL and the authorities in recent days.

The pair were abducted from a GOAL compound by a gang of armed men in Darfur last Friday.

The Sudanese government says the kidnapping was an act of banditry, rather than a political act, and it expects the women to be freed shortly.
