The annual report of the Irish Human Rights Commission warns that the body is in danger of running out of money before the end of the year.

The report reveals that enquiries from the public are up over a third this year with people wanting help on issues such as immigration, discrimination and human trafficking.

The government body will have its budget cut by over 32% this year, and say they are having trouble paying staff.

IHRC Chief Executive Eamon Mac Aodha said the increased workload was making it difficult to operate in the current climate.

“The problem for us is that as we become better known we are getting more referrals from Government to examine legislation,” Mr Mac Aodha said.

“We're also getting more people calling at our doors, and it is difficult to manage all of that when your resources are dwindling so severely.”
