There has been an increase in the number of women applying to make contributions towards a State pension.

It follows the launch of an information leaflet last year, to make women who are involved in a family business, including farmers’ wives, aware of their entitlements.

The Department of Social and Family Affairs says 845 people, mostly women, have applied to make pension contributions towards a State Pension in the last 12 months.

Minister Mary Hanafin said many women are entitled to make these payments and do not realise it.
