Slow welfare system forcing people appeal to charities, says Gilmore

Newly unemployed people are turning to charity to fend off starvation because the creaking welfare system is taking so long to process payments, it was claimed today.

Labour leader Eamon Gilmore said some are waiting weeks even for emergency cash because a lack of benefits staff cannot deal with the scale of joblessness.
