Man accused with murder walked with limp because of injury

A Cavan man accused of murder walked with a limp because of an injury to his left leg, the Central Criminal Court heard today.

The court has previously heard that two men were seen running from the scene of the alleged murder and that one of the men had a “distinct limp”.

Trevor McCabe (atged 34), Mountpleasant, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan has pleaded not guilty to murdering Darren McGrath (33) in Belturbet, Co Cavan on May 20th last year.

It is the prosecution’s case that Mr McCabe shot Mr McGrath as he slept.

Dr Nasir Awin, a consultant surgeon, told the court that he treated Mr McCabe after he had suffered an injury to his left leg from a road traffic accident in August 2007.

Dr Awin said that Mr McCabe walked with a limp because of the injury.

Previously, the court has heard from Leon Frahill, who said that he stayed in the deceased man’s house the night before the alleged murder.

Mr Frahill told the court that he woke up after having heard a loud bang.

He saw two men, one of whom was “running away from the house with a distinct limp”, the court heard.

The court also heard that a man named Liam McCaul went into a Spar shop in Dromore, Co Tyrone, on the evening of May 20 last year.

David Mooney, manager of the shop, told the court that the man was “intoxicated”.

The court also heard that a carrier bag belonging to Mr McCaul was left in the shop.

In the bag were various items of clothing, a hacksaw and a pair of trainers.

The bag was handed over to members of the PSNI, who were investigating the death of Mr McGrath, the court heard.

The trial continues.
