Braun axes 160 jobs
A total of 160 jobs were axed today at a manufacturing plant in Carlow.
A further 100 positions at Braun will be saved and transferred to the companyâs Newbridge site by mid-2010.
Management said the job losses were a result of the decision to phase out the Braun gas-powered cordless haircare business by June 2009, due to a decrease in consumer demand over the past few years.
âWe are committed to providing all the necessary support required for all those who will be leaving Braun and ensuring a smooth transition for those employees transferring to Newbridge,â added a spokesman.
Green Partyâs Mary White said it is a bad day for Carlow.
âWe have just been given news that a great source of employment and opportunity for the people of Carlow is being closed down,â said the local TD and party spokesperson on Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
âMy sympathies are with the workers and their families, who are undoubtedly facing an uncertain future.
âIâve been told by Braun that employers and the unions are working to make sure there is full support for those who have lost their jobs.
âWhile I welcome the news that 100 jobs will be retained, although transferred to Newbridge, the loss of the Carlow jobs and the iconic factory building cuts the heart out of Carlow.â
