PSNI review Omagh bombing evidence
The PSNI have begun the process of reviewing all the evidence around the Omagh bombing to see if they can bring new charges against the man acquitted last year of involvement in making the bomb.
Sean Hoey, from South Armagh, was cleared after a judge found that evidence had been tampered with and “beefed-up”.
However, since then a Police Ombudsman's report has cleared officers of lying to the courts.
Assistant PSNI Chief Constable, Drew Harris, confirmed this afternoon that investigators are examining all their options.
“We revisited all of the evidence again, not only in respect of the actual Omagh Bombing, but other bombing attacks around that time that involved the Real IRA,” the officer said.
“Working through that, what we're looking for is new evidential opportunities.
“Realistically, we have to find substantial new evidence if there’s any possibility of criminal prosecution.
“We'll go where the evidence takes us - there was a whole series of attacks through 1998 into 1999 and that's what we're looking at.”
