Gardai in Co Mayo have arrested eight people for alleged public order offences connected with the Corrib gas project.

Two women were detained at Glengad Beach at around 7pm last night, while six men were held in the same area at around 4.30am today.

They are believed to have been disrupting work in the area being carried out as part of the controversial Corrib project.

Two of the men are due to appear before Westport District Court later today, while the other six are in custody at Belmullet garda station.
