Loyalist band agrees to reroute Coleraine parade

The organisers of a loyalist band parade have voluntarily re-routed the event away from the area where a Catholic man was murdered in Coleraine, Co Derry, on Sunday.

Local clergy, the Parades Commission, the SDLP, Sinn Féin and the nationalist community had all asked the Pride of the Bann band not to march close to the victim's home.

The band had intended to march with 2,000 supporters close to where 49-year-old Kevin McDaid was beaten to death by a mob of Rangers fans.

A second man remains critically ill in hospital after also being attacked by the gang.

The band has now decided not to march across a bridge over the River Bann, but says it resents the way it has become embroiled in the controversy.
