The number of skin cancer cases being diagnosed in Ireland has increased by more than one-third in 10 years, according to new figures published today.

The Irish Cancer Society says the number of new cancer cases being detected annually was up 36% between 1997 and 2007.

The number of women under 50 presenting with malignant melanoma was up 75% in the same period.

Up to 90% of cases are caused by over-exposure to the sun's ultra-violet rays.

The Cancer Society is launching an awareness campaign today to inform people how they can protect themselves from such rays.
