The Oireachtas Committee on Climate Change is urging the Government to roll out infrastructure for electric cars and help Ireland become a world leader in the technology.

In a report out today, the committee says thousands of jobs could be created and running costs for motorists could be slashed if electric cars become the norm.

The report says such cars are not only better for the environment, but also cheaper to run than petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.

Fine Gael TD Simon Coveney, who authored the report, says the roll-out of the technology could be a huge boost to the Irish economy.
