A post mortem examination will take place today on the body of Michael Dwyer, who was gunned down by Bolivian security services.

Police in the South American country claim the Co Tipperary native was one of three men killed in a hotel shootout last week over an alleged plot to assassinate president Evo Morales.

The body of the 24-year-old Tipperary native arrived back in Ireland on Thursday night.

His funeral is expected to take place later in the week, though a family spokesman said details can not be finalised until after the post mortem.

Foreign Affairs Minister Micheál Martin insisted a credible investigation was needed into the death.

President Morales rejected demands by Mr Dwyer’s family for an international panel to independently investigate the deaths.

Mr Martin said he had spoken with the Bolivian government to stress the need for an inquiry that would have the confidence of everybody, including Mr Dwyer’s family.

Mr Dwyer’s parents have dismissed claims that their son was involved in an alleged plot to assassinate Mr Morales.

The post mortem is expected to shed some light on the circumstances surrounding Mr Dwyer’s death.
