E. coli found in one-third of private water schemes

Almost one-third of Ireland's private group water supplies are contaminated with E. coli, according to the latest report on drinking water quality from the Environmental Protection Agency.

The agency says the parasite, which originates in human or animal faeces, was detected in 184 private water schemes in 2007.
