New Asda store to create more than 400 jobs in Antrim
At least 400 jobs are on their way to Antrim after the North's Environment Minister Sammy Wilson today gave the go-ahead for Asda to build their largest store in the North at Junction One.
Local traders have campaigned against the 54,000 sq ft store, claiming it would decimate the town centre – but the minister said he did not believe it would.
“Having weighed up all the arguments that have been made to the Planning Service, I believe the new store is unlikely to have adverse impact on the town centre’s viability,” he said.
Mr Wilson said he also did not foresee any unreasonable or detrimental impact on traffic movement or road safety.
He had given full consideration to all issues relating the the planning application and said: “The granting of this application will, I believe, benefit the economy, creating much needed work in the construction and retail sectors at a time of economic downturn.”
Asda said the £25m (€27m) store would offer a wide range of products including food, household, fashion, electrical goods and entertainment.
It was committed to setting up a local employment partnership with local job centres to target job seekers, it added.
The supermarket giants contended that far from drawing people away from Antrim town centre, the outlet would attract more people.
Tom McGarry, Asda property communications manager said: “We are delighted that Environment Minister Sammy Wilson has approved the development. Since our plans were submitted we’ve had fantastic support from the local community with an independent poll showing 88% of local people supporting plans for an Asda at Junction One.”
He added: “At a time when the costs of living in Northern Ireland are increasing, it is important for individuals and families to receive as much help as possible.
“This decision ensures local people will have access to a quality supermarket offering the low prices and great customer service that Asda is famous for.
