There have been noisy scenes this morning at a special meeting of Bank of Ireland shareholders arranged to approve the Government's €3.5bn recapitalisation plan.

A number of shareholders called for the board of the bank to resign following the collapse of the firm's share price in recent months.

Company chairman Richard Burrowes used the occasion to apologise to investors, saying he and his fellow directors deeply regretted the losses they had suffered.
