SIPTU slams call for cuts in social welfare payments
Ireland's largest trade union has slammed a call by a leading stockbroking firm for cuts in social welfare payments.
Goodbody Stockbrokers claimed yesterday that the move was warranted because of falling inflation.
SIPTU, however, says the solution to the current economic problems should not rest with taking money from the most vulnerable sectors of society.
It is calling on the Government to re-enter talks with trade unions on a social solidarity pact that will see the burden of economic recovery shared fairly according to people's ability to pay.
