Carey confident Dáil will support committee powers
Bank bosses and senior executives in the financial sector could be compelled to appear before a Dáil committee under new powers being considered.
The Government Chief Whip Pat Carey said he believes the Dáil would support giving new powers to the Oireachtas Economic and Regulatory Affairs Committee.
The auditors for Anglo Irish Bank, Earnest & Young, have refused to appear before at committee and former Anglo chairman Seán Fitzpatrick has not responded to an invitation to give evidence.
The Chief Whip said change is likely.
Mr Carey said: "I’m expecting that a motion like that will be put before the Dáil possibly in the coming week or as soon as possible.
"It would enable the Dáil to investigate thoroughly issues, particularly those in the financial sector, which have been of concern to the Dáil and indeed to the general public."
