Hundreds of jobs at First Active branches around the country are believed to be under threat as part of restructuring plans by the bank's parent company.

First Active is part of the Ulster Bank Group, which is owned by Royal Bank of Scotland in the UK.

RBS is currently undertaking a major restructuring programme which could lead to up to 10,000 job cuts worldwide.

The company is understood to be considering a merger between First Active and Ulster Bank, which would have serious implications for First Active's 60 branches in Ireland.

The Ulster Bank Group says it will consult with employees and their representatives before any announcements are made.

First Active was a major player in Ireland's property boom and was the first lender to launch 100% mortgages in the Irish market.
