Hundreds of pupils were evacuated from their school today when workmen unearthed what they believed to be an unexploded Second World War mortar bomb in the grounds.

The device was found at Bangor Academy in Bangor, Co Down, forcing the school to be cleared and several surrounding town centre streets to be closed off.

Army bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene, said police.

The school moved to a new multimillion-pound building earlier this year and workmen are still digging in the grounds as they put the finishing touches to it.

Two days ago a Second World War grenade was removed from a private collection in a house a few miles away in Newtownards over fears it could still explode.
