North’s EPA joins probe into pork contamination scare

The North's Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed that it is investigating an oil recycling plant suspected of being the source of the dioxin contamination in Irish pork.

The agency hasn't named the company, but it is believed to be O'Neill's Fuels of Coalisland, Co Tyrone.

As early as five years ago, the firm was promoting the recycling of domestic cooking oil into biofuel.

The dioxin contamination in Irish pork has been traced to feed provided by Millstream Recycling in Co Carlow.

Dioxins are believed to have got into the feed because toxic waste oil from old electricity transformers was used to run machines involved in the drying process.

Millstream has insisted that it has only ever purchased oil from a legitimate source in Ireland.
