Talks continue in effort to restart pig-meat industry
Pig-meat producers are due to resume talks with the Department of Agriculture this morning in an effort to fix the crisis in the pork and bacon industry.
The two sides have already held almost seven hours of discussions on how to get the industry back up and running as quickly as possible following the dioxin contamination scare.
Hundreds of workers in the processing sector have already been laid off following the removal of Irish pork an bacon from shops around the world and the shutdown of the industry.
A compensation package for effected farmers is understood to be a sticking point in the talks, with the Government and the IFA both hoping to secure EU aid to help foot the estimated €1bn bill.
