The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has moved to allay the concerns of trade unions after hinting yesterday that the economic downturn could threaten the national pay deal.

Mr Cowen suggested in the Dáil that he had discussed a possible deferral of pay increases with employers and trade unions during recent talks.
