A 41-year-old man remained in a critical condition in hospital tonight after being gunned down in a suspected gangland shooting in north Dublin.

A 41-year-old man remained in a critical condition in hospital tonight after being gunned down in a suspected gangland shooting in north Dublin.

The victim was shot as he sat in his car outside a bookmakers in Finglas just before 12pm.

He tried to escape his attackers but was hit again as he made off toward a nearby garden in the Cardiffsbridge Road area.

Two 20-year-olds have been arrested and continue to be questioned by gardaí tonight.

The injured man is being treated in the Mater Hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable.

Officers said the weapon used was a handgun.

In the aftermath of the shooting, gardaí undertook a number of searches across the city and recovered a van that was believed to have been used in the incident.
