The Government is introducing new standards to banish the bedsit blues.
New legislation will see inspectors going into thousands of flats to check the condition of kitchens and bathrooms as well as other facilities for refuse and laundry.
Improved standards on lighting, heating and fire safety will also be enforced under the laws.
Open fires will no longer be allowed as the sole source of heat.
The legislation is currently proceeding through the Dáil and Seanad and some provisions will come into force as early as February 2009.
