Man arrested in connection with Dublin murder

A man was arrested today over the country’s latest gangland killing.

Gavin McCarthy, 24, was shot dead in Dublin’s north inner city on Sunday night - the 14th gun murder victim this year.

Gardai said a 20-year-old was arrested this morning in the north inner city area and is being held at Store Street Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against The State Act.

He can be held for up to 72 hours.

Mr McCarthy was known by gardaí but was not a major gangland figure.

Detectives believe his suspected killer cycled up to him on Sheriff Street at around 9pm on Sunday and shot him dead at pointblank range.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old shot in Tallaght yesterday remains in a critical condition in hospital, gardaí said.

Robert Delaney was hit in the head by a bullet through a third-floor window of an apartment when he looked out after the gunman knocked at the door below.

It is understood that his two young children and girlfriend were in the apartment in Russell Rise, near Fortunestown Way, at the time of the attack shortly after 6.30am.

Teams of gardaí combed the area as it was cordoned off for a full forensic examination. Local residents were questioned by detectives.
